The existing panel may need to be replaced
A hole cannot simply be added to every installed glass panel. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after it has been manufactured, so an existing toughened panel will usually need to be replaced with a new panel made for the pet-door opening.
The new panel can then be measured and prepared for the selected pet door before the glass is completed and installed.
What needs to be checked first
The useful first step is confirming the door, frame, glass and pet-door model together. This avoids ordering a panel that does not suit the opening or the way the door operates.
- A wide photo of the full door and frame
- A close photo of the glass meeting the frame
- The pet-door brand or model, if already selected
- Your pet’s approximate size
- Your suburb and any access details
Choose the pet door before the final glass measure
Different pet doors need different openings and clearances. Having the intended unit available before the final measure helps the glazier confirm the cut-out and its position in the panel.
Placement also needs to work for the pet, the frame and the door hardware. A photo is useful for the first conversation, followed by a site measure where required.
